With the recent surge in gasoline prices to new record levels, commuters and travelers are increasingly looking to ridesharing to quickly slash the cost of transportation. Traffic and new listings on eRideShare.com have risen sharply since February, averaging more than 1600 unique visitors per day in the last 10 days of April, an increase of about 130%. While the increase in interest after Katrina proved to be of brief duration, mostly subsiding after 6 weeks, this movement has continued to strengthen for eight weeks to date. "The price at the pump is inflicting considerable pain on commuters," said Executive Director Steven Schoeffler. "They also realize that vehicle exhaust contributes, via global warming, to extinctions, drought, and rising oceans, and that their oil dollars are going directly or indirectly to countries that we are in conflict with. It adds up to a compelling argument for carpooling, and people are responding." ABOUT ERIDESHARE.COM - eRideShare.com, founded in 1999, is the leading carpool/ridesharing website, according to Yahoo and Google. Interest had substantially increased even before Hurricane Katrina, but in its wake average daily new commuter listings were at about six times pre-August levels, with a record of 265 carpool listings in a single day, eclipsing the pre-August record of 34. Gasoline prices have been climbing steadily, but until now carpooling interest has been relatively constant. However, with average gasoline prices over $3/gallon, part of the public is feeling enough pain at the pump to reduce their gas expenses by changing their driving habits. "People are realizing that they can save thousands of dollars a year by carpooling," said Executive Director Steven Schoeffler. "At the same time, they know that they're helping to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by sharing the ride."
